Drought crop insurance season ends in Kazakhstan: more than 5 billion tenge paid out to farmers

The season of insurance protection for grain and oilseed crops against soil moisture deficit has ended in Kazakhstan. Over the past season, agricultural producers insured 517.4 thousand hectares of crops on non-irrigated land. Insurance companies paid farmers 5.1 billion tenge for insured events that occurred. This was reported by the press service of JSC Agrarian Credit Corporation.

According to official data, a total of 330 contracts were concluded under drought crop insurance. The total amount of insurance premiums came to 3.4 billion tenge. Of this, 80% of the insurance premium was subsidised by the state, while the actual costs of agricultural producers amounted to 687.6 million tenge. In terms of agricultural producers' own funds, this equals about 7.5 tenge in payouts for every tenge they spent on the insurance premium.

According to satellite monitoring, during the period of insurance cover, moderate, significant and severe soil drought was recorded in ten regions of the country: Abai, Akmola, Aktobe, East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, West Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Kostanay, Pavlodar and North Kazakhstan regions. The total crop area where this risk was recorded amounted to 385.4 thousand hectares.

Insurance cover took into account the climatic features of the regions. In Almaty, Zhambyl, Kyzylorda, Mangystau and Turkestan regions, as well as Zhetysu region, the insurance period ran from 15 March to 15 June 2026. For Akmola, Aktobe, Atyrau, East Kazakhstan, West Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Kostanay, Pavlodar and North Kazakhstan regions, as well as Abai and Ulytau regions, it ran from 15 May to 15 September.

Insurance products were used in two-phase and three-phase formats, making it possible to take into account moisture deficit at different stages of crop vegetation. For insured events that occurred, payouts were made for all covered phases: three phases for grain crops and two phases for oilseeds.

At the same time, some farmers began insuring their future harvest even before the start of the season. Of the 517.4 thousand hectares of insured crops, 98.1 thousand hectares were placed under insurance cover in December 2025.

The results of the season reflect not only the scale of the weather risk, but also the volume of the financial mechanism deployed to cover it.

The entire insurance process – from submitting an application and concluding a contract to receiving an insurance payout – is carried out electronically on the Kezekte.kz platform.

The Agrarian Credit Corporation is the operator of agricultural insurance and provides the mechanism for implementing state support that helps reduce farmers' risks.
