Meat to markets, milk to factories

Kazakhstan produced 6.2 million tons of milk last year. But only 1 million tons of this is commercial milk suitable for production. One fifth of this commodity raw material comes from large specialized farms. This means that the production of high-quality raw materials needed by domestic dairies is a sought-after business today.

It was this segment that was chosen by the peasant farm “Kok Zhailau”, operating in the village of Tegistik, Bayzak district, Zhambyl region. The agricultural enterprise is headed by Bakhtiyar Baratov, who was engaged in sheep breeding several years ago. After time, he decided to start a new direction for himself and turned to the Agrarian Credit Corporation for financing.

“In 2018, having taken out a preferential loan, we brought 60 head of Simmental heifers from the Czech Republic. In 2019, under the program “Economy of Simple Things,” we opened a dairy mini-farm for 100 heads. In 2020, we took out another loan to import equipment and 30 heifers from Germany Simmental breed. Without the Agricultural Credit Corporation this would hardly have been possible, the conditions for farmers are very favorable,” says the head of the farm, Bakhtiyar Baratov.

Now the number of animals on the farm has reached 300 animals, of which 100 are milking animals. The farm produces about 700 liters of milk per day, which is sold to nearby dairies. The bulls go for meat. Even though a cow can be milked for 9 months, the farmer produces milk only 6 months of the year - in order to maintain the quality characteristics of the livestock and products. In the future, it is planned to establish our own production of dairy products.

By the way, this is so far the only farm in the Bayzak region that breeds Simmental cattle and produces cow's milk on an industrial basis.
